Saints kickoff season

Vail Christian returns quarterback P.J. Bevan and running back Robbie Brgoch, two stars in a deep and talented junior class. Saturday’s game against Longmont is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Battle Mountain High School, the new home field for the Saints.

“We’ve been working for two weeks prior to this and we’re just trying to take care of the fundamentals like blocking, tackling and following assignments,” head coach Bob Isbell said. “The new field’s going to be a little cooler and a little higher. That should be to our advantage.”

Look for guys like Andrews Bauer, Will Guffey, John McGee and Stephen Shainholtz to take care of the line duties. All four are juniors.

On the defensive side, look for Matt Seatvet to pick a few passes as defensive back, while linebackers Steve Reid and Joe Romero will use senior experience to shut down the run, stomp the pass, and pick up a few wins this season.

The biggest difference between this year and last, when the Saints went 0-8?

“They’re highly motivated,” Isbell said.

Saints volleyball starts the season

Starting Saturday, the Saints will be back in action as Vail Christian volleyball marks the beginning of another season. And with six returning starters in the lineup, including sophomore hitter Rachel Glandorf, look for Saturday’s match at Glenwood Springs to improve on last season, when Vail Christian took the No. 2 seed into district play.

Add that experience with a team double the size of last year’s squad, and expectations will arise.

“It’s going to make a big difference with the program,” head coach Cathy Alexander said.

With 16 girls on the squad, the Saints have formed a junior varsity squad, which will play before the varsity during the regular season. The home opener for the Saints is scheduled for Sept. 7 against Crested Butte, with a start time of 10 a.m. at St. Claire’s in Edwards.
