Saints soccer breaks into the win column
BASALT — From now on it will definitely be “Tootsie Roll” from 69 Boyz for Vail Christian soccer.
“I was joking with the girls in the car that we needed to play my favorite pump-up song, and, if we won, they’d have to listen to the song, whatever it takes,” Saints coach Lauren Mutter said.
And after the Saints came away with a 2-1 overtime win at Basalt on Saturday, Vail Christian will wear out that track on a compact disc, an MP3 player or streaming service.
That is Vail Christian’s first win since April 5, 2013, a 4-0 victory over Rangely. The Saints had never beaten Basalt. And going into the “way-back machine,” that’s Vail Christian’s first golden goal since April 19, 2009, a 2-1 win against Roaring Fork (Allie Parker to Brooke Bowles).
No more moral victories. No more “We were competitive.” Saints win.
Morgan Colton had a fast break in the 94th minute. Her shot bounced out to Keelin Robinson, who one-timed it into Longhorns’ net.
“Yeah, we were definitely really excited that we got our win,” Robinson said.
“Our team is beyond excited,” Mutter said. “It’s just exciting for our program, and, now, we want to keep it going.”
Making it all the more dramatic was that Vail Christian (1-3) is that the Saints had led on a Jessie Raitt goal, only to see the Longhorns equalize with 10 minutes in regulation.
‘Gave 100 Percent’
“Everyone’s energy definitely went down,” Robinson said. “In overtime, we picked our heads up and finished what we needed to do. We worked together and gave 100 percent.”
While the golden goal is what will be remembered, Mutter was also proud of the way her defense rose to the occasion. Goalie Bianca Valenzuela returned after missing the second half of Thursday’s Vail Mountain School game to play a great game.
Barbara O’Brien, Maddy Friel, Susan VanDerveer and Emma Haynes were all stout in front of Valenzuela.
The Saints will try to make it two in a row on Thursday at Roaring Fork.
