EDWARDS – It’s the second week of February and the Vail Christian boys are sitting above .500.

At 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the 1A Mountain League, it’s world gone Sheldon Kuhns and his J-Boys, not to mention our honorary Saints’ J, Caleb Pearson.Vail Christian crested above the .500 mark by sweeping the season series against Crested Butte with a 55-43 win Saturday at St. Clare. The Saints have never won eight games in a season, much less be over .500 this late in a season.

“We jumped out to a nice lead. We led by seven after the first quarter and 14 at the half,” Kuhns said. “The guys executed our half court offense as well as they have all season. Our defense, with the exception of one kid, took away the 3-pointers from them, which hurt us the last time we played them. They did a good job.”The one guy to whom Kuhns was referring was the Titans’ Peter Heeland who scored 33 of his team’s 43 points. But the Saints had plenty of balanced offense to counter Heeland.

Jamie Graef, who’s been battling a shoulder injury from football season, poured in 21 points. Jaryd Francis followed with 12 and Pearson had 10. Jonathan Armstead only registered five points, but the coach gave big props to the junior for his defensive contributions.Vail Christian hosts Summit’s junior varsity on Saturday for Senior Day. The girls tip at 11 a.m., followed by the boys at 12:30 p.m. at St. Clare.
