EDWARDS, Colorado ” Every team in every spring sport feels like it has been waiting forever to get outside and compete.

No team can hold a candle to Vail Christian track and field when it comes to the waiting game. Between spring break, the school’s mission trips, and yes, the snow, the Saints are finally ready to go during today’s Eagle Valley Invitational.

“It’s exciting,” said Amy Flammang, who coaches Vail Christian with Chris Gamble. “We’re really happy with the quality of our kids. It’s a tough sport, and you have to have a lot of determination and will power to do it. The weather really hasn’t cooperated. It’s a good thing we practice in Gypsum.”

On the girls’ side, Jessica Linder is coming off a state appearance in the 1,600 meters. She and Lettie Fickling will be competing in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. Micaela McGugkin, a freshman, is also joining the long-distance crew.

Elizabeth Shearon was on the Saints’ 800 relay state team, and she leads the team’s sprinters. Look for Hannah Vancuren, Kira Geddes and Rachael Burnett in an assortment of dashes.

The boys have 17 athletes out. The Saints 3,200 relay team qualified for Denver last year and three of those runners are back in Eric Gallagher, Ian Hamina and Ryan Vlaar. Look for freshman Chris Purse to round out that quartet.

Hamina also will be in the 3,200 and 1,600, while Vlaar should be strong in the 800. Purse will also be in the sprints.

The Saints has a bunch of sprinters in Gallagher, Travis Whitley, Bubba Murray. Steil Beagley, Jason Propp, Mark Myers, Ian Ryan, Kieran Hurtt, Dan Schramm and Ryan Morris. Expect, the Saints to start forming some relay teams with this abundance.

Also look out for Kris Thornton in the 1,600 and the hurdles. Stephen Cheesman and Ben Muhlethaler will be factors in the 400 and Sebastian Pierce-Durance will be in the high and long jumps.
