Saturday’s winter tri is North American Championship
VAIL- Saturday, many of the top athletes in the region will be gathering in Leadville for the Third annual Street Swell Winter Triathlon. This race is at the Leadville’s CMC Timberline Campus at 10 a.m. and will consist of a 5K snowshoe, 10K snow-bike and an 8K skate-ski, and is open to both individual competitors and teams.This is the fifth and final event of the 2011-12 Pedal Power Snowshoe Adventure Series, now in its 16th season. The nonprofit series benefits local charities in Eagle and Lake counties.This is the second year the the Street Swell Winter Triathlon will serve as the North American Championships.The snowshoe leg of the event takes place on off-piste, singletrack, with the bike and ski portions playing out on groomed Nordic track. Racers should meet at the CMC Timberline Campus, just south of town, one hour before the start to leave time to register and coordinate equipment. Participants should call Pedal Power in advance at 970-845-0931 for directions. Title-sponsors for this year’s series are The Vail Daily, First Bank, Gorsuch, Ltd., Maximum Comfort Pool & Spa and Dollar Rent-a-Car. Other individual event sponsors include, The Tennessee Pass Nordic Center & cookhouse, Pazzo’s Pizza and The Leadville Race Series.Pre-registration for this event is $35 for individuals and $30 per person for teams. Racers can register on the day of the race for $45 for individuals and $30 per person for teams. New this year, participants can pre-register directly online at pedalpowerbike.com. They can also get forms at Pedal Power Bicycle Shop in Eagle-Vail.
