School records fall at Battle Mountain Invite

EDWARDS — There was time for the serious and not too serious at Tuesday’s Battle Mountain Invitational in Edwards.

In serious stuff, Battle Mountain’s David Casas went 153 feet, 8 inches while winning the discus. That’s just 3 inches short of Josh Henry’s school record, set way back in 2001. And this was just after Jessica Cuomo tied Morgan Spanel’s girls discus record last weekend.

As far as actually breaking school records, that happened, too. Izze Calabrese broke her own mark in the pole vault. The Huskies’ 800-meter girls relay of the Calabreses (Izze and Sofia), Lily McMurrain and Taylor Anderson recorded a new time.

Eagle Valley’s Cody Osteen added to her own school record in the pole vault.

In other Devils’ news, Riley Rowles returned to competition with a second place in the long jump. Rowles also threw the shot put.

Why not?

In addition to having a chance to compete in front of the home fans, there was a certain element of fun in Tuesday’s meet. Huskies coach Rob Parish had his long-distance runners doing sprints as a workout. (Ergo, meet Cameron Moore in the 100 meters?)

Of course, Parish put Izze Calabrese in the aforementioned 800 relay and that was a school record, so, sometimes, tinkering is good.

Along those lines, Battle Mountain ditched the open 3,200 in favor of distance medleys — legs of 800, 400, 1,200 and 1,600 meters.

Count Devils coach Jeff Shroll as a fan.

“I like that Battle Mountain does the distance medley,” he said. “I’m still a big fan of the old 1,500 (meters) and the 3,000 (meters). I wish we got rid of the 3,200 and run the distance medley. But that’s coming from a middle-distance guy.”
