Seniors shine for Devils at state

DENVER — Eagle Valley track and field is happy and sad at the same time after Day 1 on Thursday of the 4A state track meet at Jeffco Stadium in Denver.

And that’s OK.

Riley Rowles finished third in the high jump, while Miles Petterson was eighth in the pole vault, both great finishes for the Devils. At the same time, it’s the end of athletic careers for those two seniors.

“That’s awesome,” Eagle Valley coach Jeff Shroll said. “It’s always bittersweet watching seniors compete in their final events. It’s cool, though, to see them get some hardware. They deserve it.”

Rowles went 22 feet, 4.75 inches in the long jump. Petterson went over the bar at 12-4.

In Eagle Valley’s third final on Thursday, the girls 3,200 had a rough go of it in 17th place with a time of 10 minutes, 12.87 seconds. That crew is Taylor Hermosillo, Victoria Schwaiger, Tyler Beckum and Carly Volkmer.

Speaking of Volkmer, all she did was run her leg of the 4-by-8, as well as two 400s. One of those 400s was as a part of the sprint medley preliminaries. The Devils (Charise Crabb, Kenzie Sisson, Shawna Adams and Volkmer) made today’s finals.

Volkmer also had her open 400 prelim and is on to the finals.

“I joked with her that she had only four more 400s,” Shroll joked.

Thanks, Coach.

For those counting at home, Volkmer’s remaining 400s are in the medley finals and mile relay prelims today, followed by (hopefully) the 1,600 final and the open 400 final.

Crabb made the finals in the 100 hurdles, while Gino Giovagnoli also punched his ticket in the boys 400.

The Eagle Valley boys 800 relay team did not qualify for the finals, but still set a school record with a time of 1:30.79. That’s Luis Chavez, Jay Neal, Cristian Aguilar and Charlie Fessenden.
