Shall we slalom?
BEAVER CREEK – Sorry, Bode. We put the jinx on you by saying Saturday’s giant slalom was yours to lose.
So to make amends, Miller has absolutely no chance whatsoever of winning today’s slalom. The slalom is the most technical discipline of them all. The course is shorter and lined with breakaway poles closely aligned to each other. You have to be quick on your feet with your turns. Otherwise, you’re toast. It’s two runs with only the top-30 after the first run advancing to the second.
The course starts with The Abyss, and there’s a reason they call it that. The steeps of the Harrier Jump and Red Tail will likely claim its fair share of victims.
Look for Ranier Schoenfelder, Mario Matt and Benjamin Raich of Austria to contend. The Finn Kalle Palander is also a force with which to reckoned in slalom. From the Italians, keep an eye on Giorgio Rocca. An American darkhorse is Erik Schlopy, who’s coming off sixth place in Saturday’s giant slalom. As for that other American Bode What’s-his-name? No chance.
