Ski and Snowboard Club Vail won the overall team title at the Rocky Mountain Division U12 Alpine ski championships, held last weekend at Powderhorn Ski Resort. SSCV athletes captured 39 top-10s and nabbed 11 out of a possible 24 podiums across two days of racing.
“These athletes have all been working incredibly hard on the mental, physical and technical skills required for ski racing, four or five days a week since early November,” said coach Martin Bell. “It made us coaches very happy to see them reap the rewards of all those efforts with impressive performances in the most important races of their season.”

SSCV U10/U12 manager Brett Borgard said his athletes were unfazed by the large volume of fresh snow on the Wonderbump run.
“We have prepared by training in all weather and surface conditions. I am very proud that our athletes dug deep and showed up focused to ski as fast as they could,” Borgard stated. “We have been preaching ‘Vail tough’ this season and they sure were tough by not letting the difficult weather conditions and course sets affect their outstanding performances. I am proud of each and every one of our U12 athletes.”
Clubs from Steamboat Springs, Aspen, Loveland, Durango, Powderhorn, Telluride, Eldora, Summit and Winter Park joined the 31 SSCV athletes for two giant slaloms on March 15 and a pair of slaloms the following day. All told, 69 boys and 71 girls competed. Ruby Bullivant led SSCV with three silver medals and a victory in the final slalom race of the weekend. On the boys side, Barrett Groff captured two golds and a bronze.

“The greatest reward was to see the improvement from the beginning of the season to now,” added coach Simon Marsh. “Some members of our group didn’t have prior racing experience. They committed to building on their skills through this season and to see them perform to the same level as the more seasonal skiers was fantastic.”

Fellow coach Sarah Schleper said the U12 squad has shown “incredible motivation and dedication” this year.
“It has been a true privilege to watch our young athletes flourish and grow,” she said. “Throughout the winter, they’ve immersed themselves in repetitive slalom, GS, super-G and freeskiing runs, culminating in impressive performances at this past weekend’s championships.”
The U12 program wraps up its season next month with a GS race in Breckenridge and the Loveland Derby slalom.
