Ski and Snowboard Club Vail shines in Breckenridge

BRECKENRIDGE ” The Ski and Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) traveled over Vail Pass and found a lot of success last weekend.
The athletes competed in the Millenium Bank Colorado Junior Ski Cup and came away with a number of strong finishes.
Saturday’s giant slalom turned into a banner day for the SSCV. The SSCV placed five women in the top-11 overall. Christa Ghent took first with a combined time of 1 minute, 43.45 seconds. Ghent’s sister Abby was right behind in second with a time of 1:44.80.
Anne Strong turned in one of the most impressive performances of the day, jumping all the way up to seventh place from her start position of 57th. Kaytlyn Samuelson had a similar result, placing 10th after starting 47th.
Haley Zaik-Hodgkins rounded out the SSCV finishers in 11th place with a time of 1:47.77.
On the men’s side, John Kemp claimed gold in the giant slalom in a time of 1:38.99. SSCV teammate Taylor Shiffrin finished third.
Abby Ghent continued her strong weekend on Sunday. Racing in a second giant slalom race, Abby Ghent crossed the finish line almost two seconds faster than the rest of the field to take first in a time of 1:45.48. Strong again drastically improved on her starting position, this time moving from 56th to sixth.
Christa Ghent finished in 13th place for SSCV.
Just like the women, the men came home with some hardware. SSCV took second, third and fourth in Sunday’s giant slalom. Shriffin led the charge with a time of 1:40.90 to take second.
Sam Coffey was the next of the SSCV contingent to finish, claiming third place. Taylor Wettlaufer took fourth in 1:41.99.
Shriffin wrapped up his weekend on Monday with a second-place finish in the slalom at Breckenridge. His time of 1:32.20 was just 0.14 seconds behind first.
Coffey took fifth place for SSCV. Chistoph Niederhauser (ninth) and Sean McCormick (11th) both had strong performances. Andreas Calabrese (17th) and Zachary Ziolkowski (19th) rounded out the SSCV skiers in the top-20.
