Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado ” Karen Ghent, a part of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail’s staff for 15 years, was named the United States Ski and Snowboard Association’s Alpine Domestic Coach of the Year, while she was coaching at the U.S. Alpine Championships in Alaska last week.
Ghent has been the alpine program director for the club for five years.
“I was surprised and honored by this award,” Ghent said.
” It is nice to be recognized for something I work hard at and have a passion for.”
Ghent’s nomination for for the award said:
“As a former national team athlete, she has given so much of herself to the sport as a coach and program director. A frequent participant as a guest coach (with the U.S. Ski Teamn National Development System) projects, member of several important sport committees and sport leader she has been and continues to be an important resource to USSA.
“During the last several years, she has led the re-structuring of SSCV’s alpine program, significantly improving the staff through new hires and staff training, while leading the club to being one of the premier ski and snowboard clubs in the USA.
“While her direct on-hill work with J4 and younger athletes does not normally draw national attention, she is singularly responsible through her role as alpine program director for both the successes of the program and the individual athletes who have graduated to the national team, college scholarships and most importantly, as young men and women with the tools and character to succeed in life.
‘Throughout her coaching career, she has touched the lives and careers of thousands of young men and women ski racers who are clearly the better for that experience.”
