VAIL — On Saturday, Ski & Snowboard Club Vail hosted a middle school and high school Nordic classic race and skate at Maloit Park with 322 competitors. The Maloit Park Invite hosted the first same-day pursuit since 2010 with middle schoolers competing only in classic. The venue was well prepared to host, serving as a site for the USSA National Rankings List Race in December and the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Nordic Town Series midweek throughout the season. The latter is a competition series for local adult skiers and student athletes of all ages.

Home-Town Advantage

The Nordic Team at SSCV, which won the USSA Cross-Country Club of the Year Award in 2013, had the home-town advantage on Saturday of training regularly on the otherwise challenging, hilly course. The club, which trains athletes all year-round in preparation for the season, was excited to be at home.

“It is so great for our athletes of all ages to be able to race at home and for the coaches to be home. We could not have asked for a better day. Our staff handled the challenge of the same day pursuit format with ease. It was truly a great day,” said Dan Weiland, SSCV athletic director.

The SSCV staff has been running the snowcat to flatten the uneven snow. Many Nordic parents have volunteered their time to shovel the sidelines, supply food and handle timing, starting, course marshaling, registration, set up and clean up. This weekend’s Nordic races featured varsity athletes from around Colorado, including Arapahoe, Bear Creek, Chatfield, Cherry Creek, Columbine, Conifer, Dakota Ridge, Evergreen, Golden, Horizon High School, Lakewood, Ralston Valley, Highlands Ranch, Mullen, Pine Creek, Regis Jesuit, Faith Christian and Battle Mountain. There were 13 high schools represented and 14 middle schools represented.

The races featured a morning and afternoon segment for classic and skate style races. The SSCV Nordic Team was confident in its ability to compete in the varsity event, having sent Nordic athletes in the past to the World Cup, National Championships and Junior Nationals. Several SSCV athletes prevailed in the races, skiing fast and placing in the top spots for each of the respective races and categories. Once again SSCV middle school girls were the most impressive, taking the top six spots. Looking forward to the rest of the season, the Nordic team will push forward and train hard in preparation for the Soldier Hollow Super Qualifier next weekend and the final push to Junior Nationals.
