Ski & Snowboard Club Vail off to nationals in Aspen
ASPEN The best 15- and 16 year-old ski racers in the country converge on Aspen to compete in the 2009 J2 National Junior Olympics, starting Friday. Qualifying for this event from Ski and Snowboard Club Vail are Abby Ghent, Greta Byrne, Mary Sackbauer, Kaytlyn Samuelson, Anne Strong, Taylor Shiffrin, Sean McCormick, and Cannon OBrien. This group has worked all season to qualify at the highest level for their age group, said SSCV coach Nick Asoian. These Ski & Snowboard Club Vail J2s were gunning down the same track just last week during a Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup downhill and super-G races. Four of the eight SSCV skiers qualifying for the J2 Nationals did so off their results from these recent speed events. During the downhill, the J2 Junior Olympians will be speeding down the same trail that was once called Americas Downhill, and some of the worlds best downhill racers have carved their way down this slope. Bill Johnson, Doug Lewis, A.J. Kitt, Marc Giradelli, and Pirmin Zurbriggen, are just a few of the former World Cup champions that have competed on this hill. Having recently done so well on this trail, coach Asoian feels SSCVs racers will have the confidence to ski strong right away.
