Slopestyle field whittled down to around 50
VAIL – More than 50 skiers will take to the slopestyle course today for the ninth annual U.S. Freeskiing Open.
The field for today’s contest, as well as Saturday’s halfpipe and big air competitions was whittled down from more than 200 athletes who pulled the best tricks out of their hats during six qualifying heats Wednesday and Thursday.Although organizers could not confirm or deny that freeskiing bad boy and Freeskiing Open champion Tanner Hall will be on the course or in the pipe for this year’s competition, he is on the pre-qualified list.
Around 25 skiers were pre-qualified for the slopestyle and halfpipe contests, including two-time X Games gold medalist Simon Dumont and silver medalist Peter Olenick.Pre-qualified skiers will be wearing basketball jerseys with their names on the back while other qualifiers will be wearing numbered bibs.
Men’s slopestyle semifinals kick off at 9 a.m. today and finals are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with women’s semifinals and finals beginning at 12 p.m. at Golden Peak in Vail.Vail, Colorado
