Ouch. A very big ouch.Eagle Valley track and field’s Mike Smith suffered a hamstring injury at Friday’s Clint Wells Invitational in Craig, leaving his status for the rest of the season in doubt.

Smith, a 40-point threat at most meets, was warming up for the 200 meters when he pulled his hamstring. Eagle Valley coach Jeff Shroll said that Smith is definitely out for the Tiger Invitational this weekend, and that the senior’s status for regionals and state is very much in doubt.”We won’t know until Monday,” Shroll said. “It would be a miracle if he’s not (finished for the season). He’s definitely down for Tiger. … Those things don’t bounce back very easy. I’m hoping we get a chance to look at Mike one more time. We’ll just see.”Smith is prequalified for the state meet in the high jump. Unfortunately just before getting injured, the senior had missed prequalifying in the long jump by 1 1/4 inches. Smith would need to return for regionals in two weeks to qualify in the sprints or as part of a relay team.In the meantime, Eagle Valley still has to keep competing, and that’s just what the Devils did Friday with their girls team finishing second at Montrose and the boys tied for third in Craig.

At Montrose, the girls’ 400 relay of Sierra Pickslay-Zamora, Shaylynn Nelson, Hattie Higgins and Ashley Rohweder took gold. Rohweder also won the 200 in 26.88 seconds, followed by Higgins in third (27.57) and Pickslay-Zamora.In the 100, Rohweder, Nelson and Emily Kingston went 2-3-5. Amy Thompson continues to creep up on Eagle Valley’s discus record with a throw of 119 feet, 4 1/2 inches, good for second. She also took silver in the shot with a season-best 35-6. Kacey Bair was six in the shot put and Jackie Eberghard was fourth in the disc. The girls’ mile relay of Sierra Pickslay-Zamora, Michelle Parmenter, Sasha Pickslay-Zamora and Hattie Higgins was sixth.Up in Craig, Smith won the long jump and finished second in high jump before he got injured. Kyle Simonett breezed to a win in the 400. Brendan Wright took second in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 300. Jamie Fahrmeyer zipped to second in the mile and Zach Thrall was fourth in the shot put.

The boy’s 400 relay was second, the mile fourth and the two-mile fifth.Eagle Valley will split its squad Saturday between the Tiger Invitational and Aspen.Sports Editor Chris Freud can be reached at 748-2934 or cfreud@vaildaily.com.
