Soccer wrap: Everyone wins

PALISADE — She had it all the way.

Battle Mountain senior Julia Mills came on the pitch on Friday in Palisade and her first touch resulted in a goal.

“It was pretty funny,” Mills said. “It was a god ball by Emily (Cope).”

And the Huskies were on their way to a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs.

“It’s an important goal,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “Anytime you’re leading 1-0 away from home, you can have a bad bounce, a bad call. That second goal is important, and it was awesome for Julia.”

Battle Mountain got the dangerous 1-0 lead via Mallory Skidmore to Morgan Croke. After Cope to Mills, Acacia Ortiz to Logan Nash finished it. (By the way, there is no truth to the rumor that Logan Parish was named for Nash. Track coach and proud father, Rob Parish, confirmed that recently.)

With the win, Battle Mountain moved to 11-0 in the Slope and 12-1 overall. The Huskies finish up league play on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Edwards. If you have an old schedule, Tuesday is Senior Night, though the Huskies host Evergreen on Thursday in nonconference play in the regular-season finale.

“It’s going to be a good one, but it’s also going to be sad,” Mills said. “I’ve played with a lot of these girls since the fifth grade.”

PARACHUTE

Saints win again

Winning’s kind of contagious.

And Vail Christian soccer is starting to get the feeling. The Saints picked up their third win of the year on Thursday, taking three points at Grand Valley by a count of 5-2.

The Saints are 3-6, thank you.

“We got that big win against Basalt and that just built some excitement,” Vail Christian coach Lauren Mutter said. “The girls like to win and today was a big game. They’re starting to feel they can do it. Grand Valley’s been a tough place for us to play. They haven’t done well there in the past, so I’m really proud of them today.”

Morgan Calton scored early before the host Cardinals took a 2-1 lead. Jessie Raitt got the equalizer just before the half for the Saints.

It was all Vail Christian in the second half. Calton and Raitt scored again and freshman Hallie Bradford got her first varsity goal.

Vail Christian is at Coal Ridge today and then head to Rangely on Wednesday.

EAST VAIL

VMS continues roll

Vail Mountain School soccer chalked up another one on Thursday, dispatching Rangely, 5-0, at iconic Bandoni Alumni Field.

Lainey Bailey, Emma Hall and Tess Johnson all scored as VMS moved to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in the 3A/2A Slope.

“I would tell you that Tess, Emma, Olivia Giacco, Sydney Sappenfield and Katie Alonzo, all of them played as a unified group in the middle,” VMS coach Bob Bandoni said. “They moved the ball across the field with intention. That reflected a lot of growth. There was the beginning of synergy.”

For those of you who had April 23 in your Bandoni synergy pool, you win.

On a serious note, VMS has a big run of conference games ahead. The Gore Rangers host Basalt today, are at Moffat County on Monday and then are back in East Vail on Tuesday for Coal Ridge.
