Sonnenalp hosts 20th annual Casual Bike Classic

VAIL – The Sonnenalp of Vail Foundation is hosting the 20th annual Casual Bicycle Classic Aug. 28 as a benefit ride for ECO Trails and the Eagle County Regional Trails System. Riders of all ages and abilities will support the ECO Trails effort to construct a safe and scenic regional system from Vail Pass to Glenwood Canyon, including a major spur trail to Red Cliff, that will connect all communities of the Vail and Eagle Valleys. To date, the Casual Classic has raised nearly $22,000 toward this effort.Riders will take part in a 38-mile casual ride beginning in Breckenridge following the recreational path 10 miles to Frisco. Next, they will hit a creek-side, 7 mile, gradual climb to Copper Mountain, followed by five challenging miles to the Vail Pass summit. Finally, they will coast, predominantly downhill, 16 miles to the Bully Ranch at the Sonnenalp Resort for a barbecue and silent auction.The emphasis on this ride is fun. As an option this year, interested cyclists can ride both directions (a total of 76 miles), leaving from the Sonnenalp Resort at 7:30 am. Pre-registration is required for riders wishing to ride both directions.Same day registration and check-in for the Casual Bicycle Classic begins at 9 a.m. in the Breckenridge skier parking lot or at 7:30 am at the Sonnenalp Resort of Vail, across from FirstBank. A shuttle to Breckenridge will leave at 8:15 a.m. from the Sonnenalp. Shuttle service is available to the Vail Pass summit for those not interested in riding the uphill. A shuttle will be provided back to Breckenridge after the barbecue.Aid stations are available throughout the course, with a barbecue at the Bully Ranch following the ride. Pre-registration is $45 per adult, $35 for kids ages 7-14 years and kids 6 and under are free. Day-of-ride registration is $50 per adult and $40 per child. Registration includes a 20th anniversary bike jersey, transportation, refreshments on the course, a chance to bid on items at the silent auction and the barbecue.
