Spring biking series continues in Eagle
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL – The Vail Recreation District officially kicked off its 2011 mountain bike race season with the Spring MTB Short Track Race last Wednesday in Eagle. The race series continues today at 5:30 p.m. at the Eagle County Fairgrounds in Eagle.
The venue has changed from 4 Eagle Ranch to the Eagle County Fairgrounds to allow wet course conditions to improve. On May 11 the series will head to 4 Eagle Ranch near Wolcott.
“Last week’s race was fun, fast and furious as we had approximately 55 riders come out for early season racing,” said Beth Pappas, the event’s director. “The weather during last week’s race was a bit chilly, but it looks like this week will be warmer and provide even better race conditions.”
Race-day activities begin at 5 p.m. with day-of registration, which will last until 6:30 p.m. The first race begins at 5:30 p.m. for kids 6-9, followed by a race at 5:40 p.m. for kids ages 10-14. Adult races begin at 5:50 p.m. with the beginner category and continue with the sport at 6:15 p.m. The final race, expert, is at 6:40 p.m. Costs to participate in the races are $5 for kids and $10 for adults.
The short-track races take place on a short, dirt loop, with adult participants completing as many laps as possible in 20 minutes, with an average lap taking approximately two minutes to finish. The length of time for the youth races is 10 minutes for both ages 6 to 9 and 10 to 14.
An after-party will be held at Dusty Boot in Eagle following the race for all participants and spectators. All racers will have the chance to win raffle prizes and adult racers will receive a free Bud Light. Unlike the seven races the Vail Recreation District has planned this summer for the Riverfront Club at the Westin’s Mountain Bike Race Series, the Spring MTB Short Track Series will not award prizes or points for individual racers or teams.
