Steamboat tourney update: Devils boys win again

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Wow, this winning thing is kind of cool.

Eagle Valley boys basketball is on a good kind of streak now with its second win in a row up at the Steamboat Shoot Out Tournament. The Devils took out Elizabeth, 76-53, on Friday.

“Most of what worked was the transition game,” Devils coach Chris Walls said. “We were able to push the ball. Our focus continues on improving.”

And that is yielding results so far. Friday night’s game was over at the half with Eagle Valley leading Elizabeth, 42-20.

Arturo Loera led the Devils with 20 points, while Jimmy Murphy had 15. Dawson Keller got the nonexistent “lunch bucket” award with a double-double, and Jesus Loera also had 12 points.

The Devils (2-3) hope to wrap a successful weekend up north when they face Roosevelt at 12:45 p.m. today.

On the girls’ side, Eagle Valley fell to Discovery Canyon, 39-30, on Friday. The issue was Discovery Canyon freshman Ashten Prechtel, who’s 6-foot-5.

“She forced a lot of turnovers,” Devils coach Sam Bartlett said. “We kept on trying to go over her instead of around here. We started to get it it, but we got it too late.”

And that, boys and girls, is why we have nonconference games.

Kylie Martin led the Devils with 20.

Eagle Valley takes on Moffat County today at 12:30 p.m.

Huskies struggle

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Both of Battle Mountain’s basketball teams took loses at the Steamboat Shoot Out on Friday.

The gents have Moffat County today, while the ladies play Discovery Canyon.
