Stickney: ‘The Plane’

Tom Stickney

How many times have heard the announcers on TV use the catch phrase. . .”he is on plane?” What does this mean, and how do I get there- this is what most people ask me!

By definition using The Golfing Machine, book as our criteria, “on plane” is whenever the clubshaft is parallel to the ball’s target line or when the end of the club closest to the ground is pointing at the ball’s target line.

When you are on plane your club is always under the control of your body and therefore there is no loose or wasted motions during its orbit around your torso. Teacher Hank Haney has a great insight to this plane principle, he is forever preaching’ “either you are on plane or you are not- there is no in between!”
