BEAVER CREEK – Also enjoying a win at Beaver Creek’s FIS slalom Sunday was Ski and Snowboard Club Vail alum and current U.S. Ski Team member Will Gregorak.

“It’s always a good feeling to win,” Gregorak said. “I went full gas today but skied smart and had two solid runs.”

Seppi Stiegler, skiing for the University of Denver, and Michael Ankeny, of the U.S. Ski Team, took second and third.

On the women’s side, Ski Club Vail alumna Sarah Schleper won the race, followed by Resi Stiegler, of the U.S. Team, and Lindsey Cone, of the University of Denver, in second and third for the day.

For the Ski Club women, Greta Byrne took the top spot, finishing third for the junior women and 15th overall. Taylor Rapley placed fourth for the juniors and 16th overall, while Celine Guilmineau placed first for the J2 women and 17th overall. Elizabeth Strong and Mary Sackbauer finished 21st and 23rd.

“All the girls made the flip 30 today (placing within the top 30 on the first run), and that’s a great thing with this field,” coach J.J. Jensen said. “They put two good runs down the hill, and they’ve worked hard all season.”

Ski Club Vail coach Dan Stripp said it is important to have Schleper, Gregorak and other U.S. Team members, as well as top-level collegiate skiers, competing in these spring events.

“This time of the year, we have these skiers come back here, and it’s great to have our own heroes out here racing with us,” Stripp said. “It’s nice to see how close we can get to them. We’re closer than we think sometimes, and it’s inspiring. They were giving it their all this weekend. It’s exciting that we can rub elbows with these athletes and see how fast we have to go to get to their level.”
