Svindal wins season-opening super-G

LAKE LOUISE, Alberta ” Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway won the opening super-G race of the World Cup season Saturday at Lake Louise, Alberta.

Svindal, the defending overall points champion, won the race in 1 minute, 29.19 seconds.

Benjamin Reich of Austria was second and Didier Cuche of Switzerland finished third.

American Steven Nyman took 13th, while teammate Scott Macartney was 17th.

The men will be in Beaver Creek this week for four races, starting with a super combined on Thursday.

Schild takes two

PANORAMA, British Columbia ” Marlies Schild of Austria won her second straight World Cup slalom on Sunday.

Schild, who had a slim lead after the first run, skied the second-fastest second run and won with a total of 1 minute, 39.95 seconds.

Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic was second with 1:40.63, beating Ana Jelusic of Croatia by a hundredth of a second.

American Resi Stiegler, who was eighth after the first run, finished ninth, just a littler more than a half-second behind the winner. Fellow Americans Julia Mancuso (16th) and Vail’s Lindsey Vonn (29th) were the only two other U.S. members to finish both runs.
