Tall tasks for Broncos’ special teams
The Denver Post
He might not pose an intimidating presence, with his slight physique and tidy, short, cropped hair, but there is no louder man on the Broncos’ practice field than Mike Priefer.
A player dropped a punt return? Missed a blocking assignment? Nailed a practice-ending field goal?
Priefer, the team’s new special-teams coordinator, is shouting about it.
Priefer, a former Navy helicopter pilot and a graduate of the Naval Academy, has been charged with revamping the Broncos’ special teams, which were mediocre in 2008.
The Broncos’ kick returners ranked tied for 23rd averaging 21.8 yards per return. The punt returners (primarily Eddie Royal) ranked No. 13, averaging 9.8 yards per return.
More concerning: The team’s punt coverage gave up an average of 11.8 yards per return – worse than only four other teams.
