Team Nike, Kloser win adventure race
MONTEREY, Calif. – On unfamiliar terrain and with inferior equipment, Team Nike is never really at a disadvantage.Friday, the adventure racing team, led by Vail’s Mike Kloser, won the first Sea Otter adventure race.Team Nike trailed in the opening leg of the race, a sea kayak portion that took the team across 7-foot swells in the Pacific ocean.”We didn’t have the resources, coming from Colorado and Idaho, to line up the best boats,” Kloser said. “We had a good two-person boat and a single boat, but local teams had fast three-person fiberglass boats. We were playing catch-up from the start.”But Kloser said they made up the time during the next part, a biking leg.”We were trailing more than halfway through the bike race,” Kloser said. “They told us we had the lead when we made the transition from biking to running.”When they got off their bikes, Team Nike had a 9 minute lead, which they would extend in the final stage, despite a miscommunication by organizers. After Team Nike realized the coordinates they had for the final leg were incorrect, they had the return to get a corrected set of coordinates from organizers. Still, the adventure race team that shocks opponents when it doesn’t win, had no problem and came in first. Two weeks ago, Kloser took first at the Elk Mountains Grand Traverse with Vail’s Steve White by only five seconds.Sports Writer Ian Cropp can be reached at 748-2935 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
