U-15 Navy spikers shine
Led by Eagle County volleyball players Rebecca Van Voorst, Shelby Wright, and Alex Lassa, the Front Range Volleyball Club-Mountain Division U-15s followed on the heels of their big sister team, the Mountain Division 17-Crimson, by placing first in Division II at last weekends Rocky Mountain Region-USAV Power League No. 2 tourney held at Highlands Ranch High School. Just as the 17s did two weeks ago, the Mountain Division 15-Navy team will move up into the top-eight teams in Division I of their age group in the RMR. Coached by Aaron Shepardson, the Mountain Division 15s went undefeated throughout the bracket play. But it wasnt easy as they lost the first game of the championship match against the Denver Parks & Recreation 15-1s. However, they won the second set of the match. Finding themselves facing match point at 14-11 in the final set, the Mountain Division squad put on a show of offensive power behind timely kills by Wright, Lassa, and Glenwood Springs Kenzi Caple to pull out the win, 16-14. Citing the steady defensive play of Van Voorst and Wright, along with the outstanding play of Lassa, Shepardson said, We are a young and inexperienced team, but today, we learned how to manage tough competition and tight situations. We have work to do to prepare for the challenge of Division I.
