Unsinkable prepare for World Pond Skimming champs

VAIL – Skimmers from all parts of the globe are gathering floaties and flippers and making the annual migration to the Vail Valley. Many will compete for fame and glory, while others have their eye on the grand prize, “The Golden Skimmer.”They are the unsinkable athletes that will showcase their water solubility on Lake Golden Peak Saturday, April 14, from 2-5 p.m. at the World Pond Skimming Championships, a showing that defies the laws of physics and perhaps even common sense. Highlighting the Spring Back to Vail festivities, the World Pond Skimming Championships is open to anyone and everyone that believes they can walk on water.Pond Skimming involves generating as much speed as possible down an in-run of snow on skis or snowboard, then skimming across a 100-foot pond of freezing-cold water. A select panel of celebrity judges will score each competitor on distance, style and overall creativity.Registration for the World Pond Skimming Championships is now open online at http://www.springbacktovail.com and is limited to the first 75 applicants. The 2007 World Pond Skimming Championships are part of Spring Back to Vail, April 2-15, two raucous weekends of music, parties and on-snow events.
