Vail Christian boys crush North Park, 56-27
Vail, CO Colorado
WALDEN, Colorado ” The Vail Christian boys basketball team continued its hot start in league play on Saturday. The Saints scored a 56-27 victory over North Park in Walden.
A suffocating defense propelled Vail Christian to the victory. The Saints allowed only 10 points in the first half to build a commanding lead.
“It was a good defensive effort for us,” Vail Christian coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “We played man-to-man. We did a good job of dominating the defensive end of the floor.”
The offense also did its part. Chris Schmidt led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. He also snared 10 rebounds.
Larry Cavanaugh and Kieran Hurtt both added 11 points and six rebounds. A.J. Burgess notched nine points, and Will Parker chipped in seven in the victory.
The win improves Vail Christian’s record to 2-0 in league play and 4-3 overall.
Shots don’t fall for girls
In Saturday’s girls basketball game, Vail Christian simply couldn’t get a shot to fall. The Saints fell by the score of 48-10 to North Park.
“We had a little trouble with their press,” Vail Christian coach Doug Bruce said. “We are slowly, but surely, getting better at handling the press. The real problem was we just couldn’t make a shot.”
Despite their offensive woes, the Saints didn’t give up. Bruce is hoping that determination translates into more wins in the future.
“The girls keep playing really hard,” Bruce said. “They haven’t lost their spirit. It’s not like they are giving up or surrendering. We just have some things execution-wise that just aren’t there yet. Hopefully, that gets turned around at some point so we can have some more success.”
