Vail Christian girls hoops wins
LEADVILLE, Colorado – Hey, ladies, pick on someone your own size.
The 2A Vail Christian girls basketball team took a chunk out of 3A Lake County Tuesday night, knocking off the Panthers, 54-33.
“We played pretty well,” said coach Doug Bruce, whose team upped its record to 5-6. “We were able to get an up-tempo game, and the girls did what they needed to do to win.”
The headliner scorers were Ashlyn Gruber with 18 points and McKenzie O’Brien (14), but the Saints got contributions from Kylie Alexander, Alexis Ellsworth, Emily Irwin and Dakota Francis.
What bodes even better for the Saints as they continue 2A Slope player later this week was their team defense in the third quarter. Vail Christian allowed just four points in the third quarter, increasing their halftime lead from 35-22 to 49-26.
“We were really happy with our offense in the first half,” Bruce said. “We devoted halftime to improving our defense, and they executed.”
Defense will likely be the focus of practice for the next two days for the Vail Christian boys basketball team.
The Saints (5-6) were outscored 20-10 in the second quarter and that was pretty much the difference in a 71-58 loss to Lake County Tuesday.
“We’re doing some good things offensively,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “We’ve just got to shore it up a little bit with the little things like fighting through screens and help-side defense. We’ll get there.”
Larry Cavanaugh had an up-and-down game. The downside was that foul trouble limited his play in the first half. The positive side of the ledger was that he scored all of his team-high 22 points in the second half, including the first 3 of his career.
Freshman Robby Bowles had 15 points. while Granger Moch had eight.
Both Saints teams return to league play Friday at Hayden before taking on DeBeque at home Saturday.
