Vail Christian sets records at Montrose meet

MONTROSE – The Vail Christian track and field team spent Friday rewriting its record book.The Saints broke or tied three school bests in its second outing of the season.Eric Gallagher, Stephen Cheeseman, Sebastian Pierce-Durant and Travis Whitley shaved 6 seconds of the previous Vail Christian record with a time of 4 minutes, 6 seconds in the 1,600 relay. Given that the mile relay is made up of all freshman, except for Whitley, things look very promising there.”They have a lot of enthusiasm and talent,” Saints coach Amy Flammang said. “I can wait until they’re juniors and seniors.Caleb Pearson went 6 feet in the high jump, matching his own record. The boys’ 3,200 relay took sixth with a 9:23.75. Gallagher, Ryan Vlaar, Pierce-Durant and Ian Hamina showed a 15-second improvement from the previous weekend with that time.On the girls’ side, Molly McGee is still fast. She took eighth in the 200 with a 28.27. The 800 relay of Katie Russ, McGee, rookie Elizabeth Shearon and Molly Brook took third in 1:52.55. The same quartet was also third in the 400.The girls’ 3,200 posted a new school record of 10:28.75. Jessica Linder, McGee, Brooks and Brooke Bowles clipped 13 seconds of their previous best.McGee finished second in the open mile with a time of 5:41, just 2 seconds off prequalifying for state.The Saints are at their league meet Saturday in Kemmling.
