Vail Christian tops DeBeque

EDWARDS — After beating Shining Mountain in December, Vail Christian boys basketball’s Ethan Ellsworth and Branden Currey celebrated by saying, “Just like football.”

After all, the duo was part of a league title during the fall, and they wouldn’t mind a winter repeat.

However, “Just like golf,” might also be a theme as Parker Poage led Vail Christian with 23 points as the Saints returned from the break with a 79-44 pasting of DeBeque at the Wheeler Events Center in Edwards. Poage’s teammate from the golf team Cooper Gould had 11 points and 8 rebounds as Vail Christian gave its coach a belated birthday win.

The footballers made themselves felt as Currey had 17 and Ellworth nine. As for a head to-head matchup between football and golf, the gridders have the bulk advantage, but Poage and Gould likely have 9-irons at the ready.

As for the basketball itself?

“We were a little inconsistent,” Kuhns said. “We had a little rust, especially on the jump shot. All in all, we played well. Our defense pushed the ball on the transition. Given that we were off for three weeks, I was very happy.”

Vail Christian’s girls host Lake County on Thursday and then both teams have Plateau Valley on Saturday in Edwards.
