Vail Christian wins opener

DENVER, Colorado – And that, ladies and gentlemen, is Vail Christian volleyball’s first state tournament victory.

The No. 4 Saints overcame the understandable state jitters to notch a 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 25- 20 win over No. 5 Wiley in the 8 a.m. opener Friday at the Denver Coliseum.

“That’s amazing,” Saints outside hitter Reanna Sutherland said. “I’m speechless.”

The Saints had been a combined 0-6 in their first two appearances down here at the Denver Coliseum, but Friday morning was clearly different.

With the win, Vail Christian is 1-0 in pool A. The Saints were going to watch the next match on the 1A court, No. 1 Fleming vs. No. 8 Simla, the two other teams in its pool.

After that, the Saints will get out of the chaos that is the coliseum for some down time.

The Saints play Simla at roughly 3 p.m. Next up in local action is No. 3 Eagle Valley vs. No. 6 Thompson Valley.
