Vail Daily column: Minturn Fitness Center hosts grand opening this weekend

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s director of human performance, John Cole, and I spent many years discussing the importance of providing a state-of-the-art human performance center for Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes.

During the course of those years, hundreds of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes continued to work out in a 20-foot-by-20-foot space at the Ski & Snowboard Club Vail clubhouse at Golden Peak. Athletes did midweek maintenance workouts in the gym at Vail Mountain School and with the addition of the Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy campus in 2011, on the stage at Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy.

A unique partnership has been created with the town of Minturn resulting in an 8,500-square-foot fitness center that serves not only the needs of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes but also Minturn residents and the community-at-large.

Hundreds of hours of planning and collaboration between Ski & Snowboard Club Vail and the town of Minturn, RKD Architects, Newell Engineering, general contractor Viele Construction and its many subcontractors have transpired, construction has been completed and landscaping finished by Johnnie’s Garden.

These efforts will be celebrated with the Minturn Fitness Center grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday. Just as the Minturn Fitness Center is all about community, its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony is, too. I invite community members to join us at this celebration for a barbecue from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the lawn at Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy in Maloit Park, adjacent to the Minturn Fitness Center, followed by dessert and the ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. at the center.

Guided tours of the facility are also available on Sunday at noon, 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The Minturn Fitness Center added new meaning for me to the phrase “If you build it they will come.” Not only are our full-time athletes and community members already participating in regular workouts and classes, along with physical therapy sessions by Axis Sports Medicine, but Ski & Snowboard Club Vail alumni Chris Del Bosco, Abby Ghent, Katharine Irwin, Heidi Kloser, Sarah Schleper and Lindsey Vonn have been training at the Minturn Fitness Center while in town. What a wonderful endorsement of what the partnership between Ski & Snowboard Club Vail and the town of Minturn has produced.

The town of Minturn and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail each contributed $1.25 million towards the construction of the Minturn Fitness Center.

A separate nonprofit has been established and is governed by a board made up of equal representatives from the town of Minturn and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail. Upon opening, Ski & Snowboard Club Vail is responsible for its operation and programs. The Minturn Fitness Center presents the latest training methods, knowledge, coaching and equipment to the community.

In addition to state-of-the-art cardio equipment, the facility includes standard and specialized strength training equipment such as pneumatic resistance machines, free weights, pulley machines and Olympic lifting areas. A performance laboratory allows trainers to evaluate fitness for individualized training programs and study human performance. Of great significance to locals is the physical therapy office located within the fitness center, the first of its kind in Minturn.

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail has partnered with the Vail Athletic Club to provide trained professional staff to supplement Ski & Snowboard Club Vail human performance staff in providing support to all members, as well as, lead classes and provide personal training opportunities.

A variety of class offerings are available including TRX, spin, yoga, core and cross-training. Approximately 20 entry-level or “level 100” class offerings per week are included with membership. More specialized, higher level classes and private and group personal training sessions are available at an additional fee.

Members of the Minturn Fitness Center have the opportunity to experience the same level of strength training and conditioning opportunities that our full-time and professional athletes enjoy.

A three-tiered membership structure provides competitive membership pricing to the public while offering discounts to the town’s and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s important partners. The deepest discount is available to Minturn residents or business owners and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail families.

The Minturn Fitness Center is also offering a two-month membership for the price of one through Oct. 15 to provide people with an opportunity to experience all that the Minturn Fitness Center has to offer. In addition, anyone enrolling in an annual membership by Nov. 15 will receive an introductory 25 percent off their annual fee.

You will find more details on the Minturn Fitness Center at http://www.minturnfitness or stop by for a tour Monday through Saturday. See you on Sunday for the grand opening!
