Vail Daily column: The season’s not ending, it’s just beginning
At this time of year, many in the Vail Valley are lamenting the fact that another great skiing and riding season is drawing to a close while pulling out their bikes, hiking boots, golf clubs, fly rods and rafting gear in anticipation of another great Colorado summer. But for athletes and coaches at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail, the season is really just beginning.
Spring and summer
As the anonymous quote goes, “The time will come when winter asks what you were doing all summer.” And so full-time Ski & Snowboard Club Vail skiers and riders are going through post-season physical testing to determine how well they have maintained their fall fitness level in preparation for the early May start to the new season’s dryland program. Full-time athletes are also enrolling in local spring training camps sponsored by SSCV and, for qualifying athletes, the US Ski & Snowboard Association, at nearby locations from late April through the end of May.
June 1 kicks off an exciting three-week clubwide camp organized by Ski & Snowboard Club Vail at Mount Bachelor for alpine, freeski, freestyle, Nordic and snowboard athletes ages 8 and older. Mount Bachelor’s extensive terrain and deep snow features alpine venues, Nordic tracks, superpipe, jump line, mogul course and an airbag site to name a few. Mornings are spent on-snow working on fundamentals, new tricks and time trials without the stress of upcoming competitions. Limitless off-snow opportunities exist each afternoon for coach directed activities including mountain biking, hiking, rafting, conditioning and trampoline sessions. A beautiful streamside lodge dedicated to housing Ski & Snowboard Club Vail campers and coaches provides a perfect base camp for all.
Upon return from Mount Bachelor, full-time athletes begin an intense four- to six-week conditioning program, including strength and power, endurance, agility and sport-specific activities such as tramping and water ramping, all geared toward maximizing on-snow performance next winter.
This beginning of the new season is by far the most important on-snow and conditioning block of the year, there for the taking by motivated athletes who are preparing to be stronger, faster or more advanced in their tricks next season.
Fitness center opening
This summer brings much excitement to Ski & Snowboard Vail athletes, coaches and the town of Minturn as we look forward to an August opening date for the Minturn Fitness Center made possible through a partnership with the town of Minturn and the support of generous Ski & Snowboard Club Vail donors.
The 8,500-square-foot building, located in Maloit Park in Minturn adjacent to Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, will include a functional fitness floor, movement studio, performance testing lab, physical therapy, men’s and women’s locker rooms and reception area.
The fitness center’s equipment is functional and state of the art. Many pieces are conventional, as would be found in most recreation centers across the country, including treadmills, dumbbells, cable machines, bikes, ellipticals, rowers, etc. There are also some specialized pieces of equipment such as over-speed treadmills, Versa-climbers, vibration plates and pneumatic Olympic racks. All of these pieces have both general and elite athlete applications.
Open to the public, as well as for the training of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes, we look forward to having you visit to tell you more about our programs, classes, training and memberships.
Enrollment for next year’s weekend and part-time programs will open in early June for all five snow sports. So even for the newest of our athletes ages 6 and older, it is time for parents to start thinking about next season. Feel free to call our offices or visit our website to learn about Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s programs and to receive guidance on where to get started.
See you back here next winter!
