Vail Little League All-Stars finish second at district tournament
The Vail Little League All-Stars made up of kids from Vail, Eagle-Vail, Minturn, Avon, and Edwards reached the final of the district tournament in Idaho Springs before losing to the Grand County All-Stars last Thursday.
The Vail All-Stars in the 11-12 year old division played six games in six days at the district tournament held in Idaho Springs against other mountain-town teams including Eagle, Leadville, Summit County, Grand County, Gilpin County, Steamboat and Idaho Springs. The Vail team went into the event as an underdog to perennial powers Eagle, Steamboat and Grand County. The team opened the tourney by defeating Steamboat, 6-2.
The boys then lost a heartbreaker to the rival Eagle All-Stars team, 5-4, after taking a 4-1 lead in the last inning. The Vail All-Stars then went on to win three straight elimination games against Gilpin, 12-2, Steamboat, 4-0, and Eagle, 11-2, to avenge the earlier loss and advance to the district championship against Grand County.
However, a strong Grand County team ended the Vail All-Stars team’s dream of continuing on the road towards Williamsport, Pa., where the Little League World Series will be held this August, with a 15-8 defeat.
