Vail mountain bike team second in season opener

Special to the DailyVail Valley Comp Team riders celebrate a second-place team finish in Division II of the Chalk Creek Challenge in Nathrop.

NATHROP – High school mountain bikers from the Vail Valley came out strong in the 2011 season opener at the Chalk Creek Ranch recently, with five Vail Valley Comp Team riders placing in the top five of their categories.

Strong individual finishes helped the team to a second-place finish in Division II of the Colorado High School Cycling League race.

Vail Valley Comp Team riders showed their strength in the competitive field of 255 riders representing 28 teams, the strongest field of riders in Colorado High School racing history. Placing in the top five of their categories were: Christian Kloser (Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy) riding in the varsity category, finishing 3rd in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 1 second; junior varsity rider, freshman Clayton Davis (Vail Christian), placing second in 1:20:36; sophomore John Bailey (Eagle Valley) finishing third in 56:35; Clare Baker (Vail Mountain) placing fourth in the sophomore girls division at 1:10:49; and rreshman rider Jackson Shanley (Battle Mountain) finishing in fifth place with a time of 57:41. Varsity and JV riders rode three laps of the 6.3-mile course and sophomores and freshmen rode two laps.

Other Vail Valley Comp Team results: Varsity – Brinton Barry (BM) 11th , 1:16:18: Christian “two flats” Shanley (VSSA) 15th, 1:23:55, and Caleb Krueger (EV), bumping up to varsity as a junior 17th , 1:34:38; junior varsity – Parker McDonald (VSSA), eighth, 1:28:27; freshman – Noah “one flat” Beairsto (BM), 21st, 1:12:04.

The course is fast and challenging singletrack crossing a juniper-covered ridgeline with plenty of loose sand and rock leading to a narrow twisting downhill section before paralleling the banks of Chalk Creek. The Colorado High School Cycling League is a project of the National Intercollegiate Cycling Association.

There are three more races scheduled: Sunday – Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede, Granby; Oct. 16 – Peaceful Valley Invitational, Elbert; and the season championships Oct. 30 – Ridgeline Rally, Castle Rock.
