Vail Mountain School keeps the ball rolling

VAIL — The Gore Rangers handily won a trap game against the Golddiggers on Thursday at Bandoni Alumni Field, 22-2.

Coming off an emotional win against Battle Mountain on Tuesday and facing winless Clear Creek, Vail Mountain School boys lacrosse kept its pedal to the floor against the non-conference opponent.

“The motto the last two days was to keep the momentum going,” said Gore Rangers coach Matt Felser. “We came out a little sluggish in the first quarter but then found our groove.”

Tyler Hancock went 7-for-7 on faceoffs in the first quarter as Vail Mountain School took three minutes to score its first of seven first-quarter goals.

Griffin O’Connell picked up a ground ball midway through the first and passed it to Luke Verratti who pump faked the goalie and put it in the net for a 2-0 lead. The Gore Rangers went on to build a 12-1 lead by halftime.

“We just wanted to keep playing our game, just keep that same intensity that we brought to Battle Mountain and do what we do,” Hancock said.

‘Play our game’

Luke Verratti added six goals and four assists while freshman Cam Bill scored the first varsity goal of his career on a nice shot with smooth handles in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Zack McKeever also scored and sophomore Julian Nisonoff added his first two goals of the season.

“The biggest thing that we can take away from today is we need to play our game and keep doing what we can do no matter what opponent it is,” O’Connell said. “We should respect every opponent we play against and play to our best ability against every one.”

O’Connell, listed at 6 foot, 7 inches, scored six goals and almost had a spinning jump shot find the back of the net. Why go in the air when you’re at least one head taller than the defender?

“Sometimes it’s nice to get a little more separation,” he said.

The Gore Rangers (5-4) face nonconference opponent Evergreen on Saturday.
