Vail rec to test lightning warnings

VAIL, Colorado ” Monthly tests of the Vail Recreation District’s lightning detection and notification system will begin Wednesday and occur at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month during the remainder of the golf season.

Coverage of the system spans from the east end of the Vail Golf Course to the west end of the Ford Park athletic fields. It is activated from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and detects lightning within 15 miles of the area. Once lightning is detected, a 15-second siren sounds. An “all clear” with three short sirens sounds once it is safe to resume activities.

During Wednesday’s 10 a.m. test, those in the area will hear the 15-second siren, followed by three short sirens.

The notification system it is meant to encourage people to stop play immediately whether on the golf course or an athletic field and seek shelter in area buildings as feasible.
