Vail RFC to hot for Boulder
Playing in near three-digit temperatures, the Blue and White raced out to a 33-5 lead and held on in the heat for a 38-24 win against Boulder.
Vail vet Greg Tarpy got Vail’s first try of the day off a beautiful pass from flanker Dennis Melia. Darren Hersey made the first of his three conversions for 7-0 lead.
Midway through the first half, Vail capitalized on a lineout just 10 meters from the Boulder try line. Fly half Andy Muir punched it in and Vail was leading 14-0. Dan Knox picked up Vail’s third and final try of the half and the Blue and White led 21-5 after 40 minutes.
Vail extended it lead on tries from Graeme Moffat and Ben Crook for a 33-5 advantage. But the heat finally did get to the Vail 15 late in the game. Boulder put up 14 quick points to close to 33-19.
Player-coach Fred Waititi restored order with a try that was set up by a magnificent run from Clayton Shonk.
Moffat won top honors as player of the game, followed by Crook with two points and James “Sticky” Stickland with one point.
With the win, Vail moved to 4-0 on the season. The Blue and White is next in action Saturday in Aspen against the defending national champs.
