Vail trail running series honored

VAIL, Colorado ” The Vail Recreation District’s Vail Mountain Trail Running Race Series was named best running race series for the second time in four years by regional magazine Colorado Runner. The five-race series was selected as the top choice in 2008 by voters via a poll on the magazine’s Web site.

Nearly 1,500 runner participated in this year’s races, an increased of 400 over 2005, said Joel Rabinowitz, the rec district’s sports director.

The schedule for next year’s races will be announced in March. The races will include the the Summer Solstice on June 20, Vail HillClimb on July 5, Half Marathon on July 19, Berry Picker on Aug. 2, 10k at 10,000 Feet on Aug. 16, Vail Trophy Race on Aug. 30 and EverGold 10k on Sept. 13.

The races will take runners on approximately 52 of trails miles for a total elevation gain of 16,475 feet.

“The Vail series provides a terrific weekend getaway for the competitive runner or the weekend warrior,” racer Buzz Burrell said. “Beautiful courses, great mountain scenery and excellent organization make Vail a perfect example of why trail running is so fun.”
