Vail Valley boarders headed to Junior Worlds
NAGANO, Japan ” The nations most talented young riders are set to kick off the 2009 Junior World Championships for snowboarding Wednesday in Nagano, Japan.
“The team headed for Nagano is one of the strongest we have ever sent to a Junior Worlds events,” U.S. snowboarding program manager Abbi Nyberg said. “They have all worked very hard to qualify for this event. It is especially exciting to watch this group of young Olympic hopefuls compete at the same venue where snowboarding was introduced to the Olympics.”
Saturday’s action includes Minturn’s Dylan Bidez, who was third at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix in Boreal, Calif. and Edwards’ Broc Warring in the halfpipe competition.
The week kicks off with snowboardcross where the likes of Nor-Am winner Mick Dierdorff of Steamboat Springs, halfpipe and snowboardcross threat Faye Gulini (Salt Lake City) and Roger Carver (Placerville, Calif.), who won the Boreal stop of the U.S. Snowboarding Revolution Tour will all try to top the world’s best juniors for a spot on the podium.
Thursday and Friday feature alpine racing with parallel giant slalom and parallel slalom with all eyes on Mimi Wiencke (White Bear Lake, Minn.), who won at the Steamboat Race to the Cup.
