Vail Valley golf: Sonnenalp hosts match play

EDWARDS – The Sonnenalp Golf Club is hosting the 10th annual Vail Valley Scratch Match Play Championship.

Th entry fee for the event is $90 per player ($70 for Sonnenalp Golf Club members ). The fee covers the qualifying rounds and any subsequent rounds as well as awards and prizes. Qualifiers do not pay greens fees for their matches. The player only pays a cart fee if he chooses to ride.

Local amateur golfers with a United States Golf Association Handicap Index of 12.0 or lower are eligible to qualify. Interns at golf courses in the area will also be considered eligible. The most recent USGA handicap revision will be used. All qualifiers must have a current resident address in Eagle County, Summit County, or Garfield County, Pitkin County, or Routt County, to be eligible.



Players may qualify at one of two qualifying rounds to be held on May 15 and May 19. Tee times for qualifying rounds will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day. The low 64 players will qualify to play in the match play event. Seeding will be according to qualifying round scores.

Ties will be broken in a scorecard playoff. By May 24, the draw of 64 players will be finalized and players may begin playing matches. The Sonnenalp Golf Club may extend exemptions to players if the qualifying field is less than 64 players. An optional $10 skins game will be included for each qualifying round this year.

Every three weeks from May 24-Sept.17, a flight of matches will be scheduled to play. Players are responsible for scheduling their own matches. Any match not played by the scheduled date will result in a coin toss to determine match winner. Matches will be single-elimination, 18-hole match play until the finals. The final will be 36-hole match play.
