Vail Valley pipeline filling Summit High pool

Jason Starr

Both are Vail Valley athletes who didn’t let the absence of a high-school swimning program in all of Eagle County stop them from participating in the sport.

Borg, who graduated last year, spent two years making the daily drive from Avon to Summit High School so he could swim with the Tigers. McGee knew Borg from club swimming, and the Vail Christian junior followed Borg’s lead this season.

“He’s pretty much the one who gave me the idea,” McGee said. “So I got in contact with (Summit) coach (Graig) Fischer, and from there it just worked out.”

McGee’s Avon-based club consists mostly of middle school girls, so to swim with a high-school boys team is a welcome change, and it’s having a good effect on his performance in the pool.

“It’s a whole new environment,” McGee said. “It’s great having other guys to push me. It gives me a much better workout.”

It’s a mutually beneficial relationship between the Vail Valley athletes and the Summit team. With participation numbers at Summit struggling to get above the double digits, another body makes a big difference, especially ones belonging to a dedicated, experienced swimmer like Borg and McGee.

“I definitely felt like I was appreciated and that I would be helpful to the team,” McGee said.

Fischer hopes the pipeline of swimmers from Vail is just starting to bear fruit. Borg’s experience was good enough that he stayed for two years. McGee is only through his first preseason, but he’s committed for this year at least.

“We’ll eventually start getting more every year,” Fischer said. “I think we’ll start seeing that, it’s just going to take a little bit of time and effort on their part and our part.”

Added McGee: “Doug broke the ice for me to come over here, and I’ll hopefully inspire some of the other swimmers to come over when they’re in high school.”
