Vail Valley preps: Devils lacrosse smacks Telluride
TELLURIDE – A game during spring break involving a long bus ride usually spells disaster for a team.
Not for Eagle Valley girls lacrosse. The Devils, with players in all sorts of new positions, shook off the rust and took it to Telluride, 17-2.
“We probably thought we were going to struggle,” Devils coach Kim Andree said. “You always wonder when you’ve lost some people because of spring break, but I was so proud of the girls. We had players in positions they had never played before and they did great.”
Eagle Valley (3-5) scored Chicago-style – early and often. Ashley Winsor had five goals, Cori Cramer four, Kayla Gagnon three and Shelby Massie two. Marisa Carreon, Oliva Keegan and Gina Johnson found the back of the net as well.
Goalie Jammie Dumolt was the beneficiary of this largesse, getting the win.
Andree also handed out postgame kudos to Haley Hutton and Massie for their play on the wings, distributing the ball well on the attack.
Next up for the Devils is Fruita Thursday in Gypsum in what should be a very intriguing rematch. Eagle Valley edged the Wildcats, 6-5, in Fruita earlier this month.
“We’ve seen what their offense presents and we’ve worked into our defense some different details which we hope will slow them down,” Andree said. “However, we know it’s going to be a challenge. We certainly don’t want to go in with our heads in the sand. It’s not going to be easy. But after today, with the teamwork we showed, if we play like that next week, I like our chances.”
