Vail Valley preps: Glenwood lax takes down Eagle Valley

GYPSUM – It’s not a move a coach ever likes to make, but Thursday it worked for Glenwood Springs boys lacrosse.

Tied 7-7 late in the first half at Eagle Valley, Demons coach Greg Schroeder pulled goalie John Adams in favor of Conner Pawlak.

“It’s just one of those days. Our starting goalie wasn’t on,” Schroeder said. “We had a back-up goalie and we just made the choice. Sometimes, guys don’t have a good day. No big deal.”

While Adams was understandably upset, it seemed to light a fire under the Demons, who outscored the Devils, 8-3, in the second half on their way to a 15-9 victory at Eagle Valley for their first win of the season.

“It was great. I’m just glad to hit the net,” joked Demons middie Drew Halsch. “I missed about 10 of my shots. I’m glad I put a few down. We played great. We caught the ball and made good passes. We shared the ball. We played good defense. I’m really happy.”

Halsch was downplaying his contributions. He may have missed a few shots, but he still got a hat trick and five assists to boot.

“I’m happy with that,” the junior said. “I like bringing it to the net and somehow, one of my guys always seems to be open. I like taking that extra pass, instead of taking the glory.”

Both teams traded goals in the first, but Eagle Valley took a 6-3 lead in the second on goals from Otto Jordan, John Landreth and Dominic Gora. Glenwood had a simple answer – a natural hat trick from Cole Kloster. to tie it at six. Kloster’s final goal was a behind-the-back beauty.

Eagle Valley’s Jordan and Glenwood’s Jake Bair traded goals to make it deadlocked at seven at the half.

From there, Glenwood took control in part due to a heightened effort. Eagle Valley contributed with a parade to the penalty box. Glenwood’s Cam Avery scored on the advantage late in the third to give the Demons the lead for good at 9-8. Demons middie Grant wood upped that lead to 10-8, again striking while a man up.

Meanwhile, Glenwood’s defense and Pawlak stood tall.

“We’ve been working between a zone defense and a man-to-man and trying to find our strength,” Schroeder said. “We ran our man-to-man for most of the game and that seemed to work out pretty well.”

The Demons’ J.R. Krueger, Wood, who ended up with a hat trick as well, and Halsch all found the back of the net during a decisive stretch in the fourth, upping Glenwood’s lead to 14-9.

“It was a good experience for our guys,” Devils coach Ted Bodde said. “It was good for us to be a in a competitive situation. It gives them a taste and that keeps them coming back. It’s hard to mount a rally when you’re down a man as much as we were.”

Eagle Valley took eight penalties in the second half, and that is definitely difficult to overcome. Landreth led the Devils with four goals and two assists. Jordan finished with two scores, while Dominic Gora, Alex Cummings and Sam Boyd all scored for Eagle Valley in its most-productive offensive day of the young season.

Glenwood hosts Fruita Monument Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Stubler Memorial Field, while Eagle Valley is off until March 30 when it is at Grand Junction.
