VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – Don’t dis Battle Mountain cross country. The Huskies take it to heart.

The Battle Mountain boys cross country team went to the Dakota Ridge Invite on Tuesday and were placed in Divi-sion II, the so-called smaller-school race.

The Huskies not only routed the competition in the Divi-sion II race but ran faster times as a team than anyone in Division I.

” The boys felt a little snubbed not being in Division I,” Huskies coach Ken Long said. ” They proved that they were the real deal.”

David Shearon and Anita Ortiz also showed that they seem to be attached at the hip. For the third time this sea-son, they both won races on the same day. Shearon fin-ished in 16 minutes, 44 seconds to win the boys’ race. Ortiz finished in 20:13, a full two minutes ahead of the ladies’ field.

The Battle Mountain boys ran in a nice, tight pack. Mitch Walker finished eighth (17:34), followed by Remsen Allard (ninth, 18:05), Eric Gallagher (11th, 18:15) and David Suarez (15th, 18:45).

On the girls’ side, Mandy Ortiz took 18th in 24:15 with Maddie Stevens right behind in 20th (24:31). Sam Engle notched a personal record with a 25: 46 and Sydney Idzikowski clocked a 27:04.
