Daily Staff Report
Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL – The 3.2 mile La Sportiva Berry Picker is Sunday, starting at 8 a.m.

The race starts at an elevation of 8,238 feet at Lionshead and ascends to 10,346 feet to finish at the top of Eagle’s Nest. The average grade is 14 percent on singletrack trails and double-wide gravel paths. There will be on aid station on course at the 1.6 mile point.

“This is a great event for newcomers to the sport. It is the perfect distance and elevation gain to challenge a beginner who wants to run/hike from the base of Vail Mountain to the summit, yet something that can be done as a strenuous effort for veterans who want to experience oxygen deficit on a grand scale,” said Nancy Hobbs, co-author of The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running.”

Runners should park at the Lionshead parking structure and walk to the start line which is at the base of the mountain by the Eagle Bahn Gondola. The gondola will be open from 8-9 a.m. for spectators to access the finish line.

The Berry Picker is the fourth event in the La Sportiva Vail Trail Mountain Series. The fifth event, the 10k at 10,000 Feet is Aug. 16. The final race is the Evergold 10k on Sept. 13.

Every participant receives a commemorative T-shirt, post-race refreshments, the opportunity to win random prizes, and results at the finish line. Prizes from La Sportiva go to overall and age group winners of each event.
