Vail Valley skiers shine at Prater Cup

CRESTED BUTTE, Colorado ” Last weekend, Crested Butte hosted the Prater Cup, a qualifier for J4 Skiers (11-12 years old) for the Rocky Mountain and Central Division J4 Junior Olympics in Winter Park March 18-21.

Ski and Snowboard Club Vail qualified 15 athletes for JOs.

Results for Friday’s super -G:

Girls: Erika McCormick eighth; Megan McGrew 11th; Leah Newton 10th; Morgan McGonagle 15th; Genevieve Soden 20th; Sasha Horn 21st; Katie Talbot 22nd; Heidi Livran 26th; Camilla Trapness 38th.

Boys: Clayton Kirwood 13th; Quin Davis 21st; Wyatt Itin 25th; Quintin Cook 38th; Woody Scruggs 44th; Victor Guilmineau 45th; Wyatt Dilling 48th; Harrison Alonzo 62nd; Sands Simonton 76th; Zeke Pierce 88th; Liam Dunn 89th; Cormac Dunn 95th.

For the giant-slalom and slalom races Saturday and Sunday, outstanding performances were turned in by several: Morgan McGonagle won second and sixth in the slaloms; Erika McCormick was third and fourth in the GS; Megan McGrew was third and fifth in the slaloms; Clayton Kirwood earned a fifth in slalom and GS; Quin Davis was sixth in GS; Wyatt Itin was eighth in GS; Leah Newton earned a pair of eighth-place finishes in GS; Katie Talbot was 10th in both slaloms.

“We were so proud of all the kids who performed really well in a pressure-cooker of a race series,” SSCV alpine program director Karen Ghent said. “They charged every run and did a great job staying focused all weekend.”
