Vail Valley soccer: Freedom F.C. falls to Sizzle; awaits Pikes Peak
EDWARDS – Send in the Cavalry.
That’s the task for the WECMRD Freedom after a 16-3 loss to the Denver Sizzle in Premiere Arena Soccer League action Saturday at the WECMRD Field House in Edwards Saturday.
“That’s what I told the girls. Let’s just wipe this one away,” Freedom coach Matt Zaremba said. “That Denver Sizzle team was pretty good. We’re going to practice another day this week. The team that we’re playing next weekend we tied 4-4 already. We’ll just try to bounce back.”
The Freedom, 1-2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Division of PASL, will host the Pikes Peak Cavalry next weekend in Edwards after trying shake off a tough loss.
The visiting Sizzle brought the total package Saturday evening against the locals with four quick goals in the first half of the opening period. It built a 10-2 halftime lead and never looked back.
Alma Martinez scored five goals for Denver, while teammate Ryann MacDonald had four. The Sizzle’s Shannon Strimple, Lindsey Reed and Leiah Kirkland each had two goals as the Freedom defense struggled. WECMRD goalie Alicia Kahler definitely had a few that she would have like back. That said, she got little help up front from her teammates.
Kaselyn Butters, Marissa Ammaturo and Lauren Meehan found the back of the net for the Freedom.
“We should have had a little more energy,” Zaremba said. “We just weren’t anticipating anything today. We had people in front of the net and a lot of balls off the wall. We just couldn’t finish. That would have helped out in the momentum of the game.”
The Cavalry and Freedom played to a 4-4 draw early this month at Pikes Peak. The Cavalry also fell to the Mile High F.C., 7-4. The Freedom knocked off Mile High, 12-4, last week.
