Vail Valley’s Devils break track and field school records

Special to the Daily

GYPSUM, Colorado – The Eagle Valley Devils track team set two school records over the weekend at the Tiger Invitational in Grand Junction.

The boys’ 4-by-400 relay team ran its race on Saturday in three minutes, 27.93 seconds, breaking a five-year-old Devils’ record.

The team consists of senior A.J. Rhoades, junior Nate Barker, senior Jalen Aquino and senior Mario Gonzales.

“It was a great race,” said coach Jeff Shroll. “It was a good performance.”

The time was good enough to win Saturday’s race. Shroll was confident that the time will also qualify them for the state meet.

The team will compete next Friday in the West Slope league meet in Grand Junction. Shroll is expecting an even faster time for the team Friday.

The 4-by-400 team performance wasn’t the only record-setting one last weekend. Jamie Bair broke her own discus school record, which she set about five weeks ago.

Her throw, which gave her a first-place finish in the meet, sailed 128 feet 5 inches.

Bair is currently ranked second in the state in discus, Shroll said.
