VAIL — The Vail Recreation District’s Vail Whitewater Race Series will continue today featuring an extended course from Betty Ford Alpine Gardens to the Vail Whitewater Park in Vail Village. This is the fourth race in the five race series, which is presented by the town of Vail and Howard Head Sports Medicine, with course design by Alpine Quest Sports.

The race will begin at 5:30 p.m. and offer competition featuring kayaking, two-person raft and stand-up paddleboard. Registration for the raft category is limited to the first 12 teams and will max out early. Races will start at the Betty Ford Bridge and finish at the International Bridge. Each competitor has one pass on the race course and will race against the clock with the fastest time declared the winner. Competition will be fierce as racers prepare for the upcoming GoPro Mountain Games Down River Sprint on Saturday. Check or Vail Whitewater Race Series Facebook page at for updates. Lakota Guides will be onsite with rafts available for R2 teams to use. Spectators will enjoy viewing from the banks of Gore Creek.

Participants can preregister for $10 for individual races or register on race-day for $15. Onsite day-of registration will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Betty Ford Bridge, adjacent to the Ford Amphitheater. Participants are asked to park at the athletic field and spectators should park in the Vail Village parking structure during the event. Shuttle service from the finish back to the start area will be available for race participants.

An after-party will be hosted at the Red Lion in Vail Village, where cash and product prizes will be awarded to the top three winners of all three categories. All participants and spectators age 21 and older will receive a free beer courtesy of New Belgium Brewing Co., the race series’ beverage partner.
